Q4 Readiness, Part 1: Placements & Targeting

Q4 fills up fast. More brands, less attention, higher stakes per impression. No matter your budget, there are always brands willing to spend more. What sets you apart is a sharper eye for who you're chasing, where you find them, and when.

In programmatic, that comes down to two moves: smarter placements and smarter targeting.

1. Be Intentional About Where You Show Up

Programmatic hands you a firehose of inventory. More of it doesn't mean better advertising; it just means more noise to sort through.

Don't just chase the audience. Meet them in the moments that matter most.

Premium inventory, high-quality video, streaming audio, and CTV each play a distinct role. The right blend depends on your audience and your goal.

Ask yourself:

  • Are we catching people while they're paying attention, or just passing through?

  • Are our placements sharply focused while still maintaining broad reach?

  • Are we buying this inventory because it checks a box, or because it drives real results?

You're not trying to be everywhere. You're trying to be in the right places.

2. Start With the Audience, Then Build the Targeting

Great targeting isn't about narrowing until almost nobody's left. It's about finding the right people with enough room to reach them at scale.

Start with what you already know:

  • First-party audiences: The people who already know you, including past customers, site visitors, donors, subscribers, and engaged fans.

  • Retargeting: Re-engage high-intent users who visited your site, abandoned a cart, or interacted with earlier ads, keeping your brand top of mind when decision time arrives.

  • Behavioral and interest-based audiences: People whose online habits signal real affinity for your category, product, or mission.

  • Contextual targeting: Reach people by what they're reading, watching, or listening to, not just a label a data provider slapped on them. Promoting a running event? Sitting next to a marathon-training article beats targeting "runners" as a demographic.

  • Lookalike and modeled audiences: Take your best-performing audiences and use them as a map to find more people just like them.

  • Geographic targeting: Zoom in as tight as the campaign calls for, whether that's a single neighborhood or an entire region.

The best campaigns rarely lean on just one strategy; they stack a few together.

3. Don't Forget the Context

Who someone is matters. What they're doing in that moment matters just as much.

Someone reading about holiday shopping is in a completely different headspace than someone researching retirement accounts. Someone watching a playoff game isn't in the same mode as someone tuned into a business podcast.

Context is a second lever for relevance. Unlike audience data, it doesn't require knowing everything about the person. Sometimes the content they've chosen tells you plenty on its own.

4. Use Q3 to Find Your Q4 Sweet Spots

Don't wait for the busiest weeks of the year to start figuring out what works. Use the weeks you have now.

Find out:

  • Which audiences respond best?

  • Which content environments perform best?

  • Which placements drive meaningful engagement, not just clicks?

  • Where can you gain reach without sacrificing performance?

  • Which audience-and-context combinations are worth scaling?

You don't need to test everything. You need to test enough to know exactly where to lean once Q4 gets loud.

The Q4 Takeaway

The strongest programmatic strategies aren't built by chasing the cheapest impression. They're built by finding the right people, in the right environments, at a scale that moves the needle.

Q4 is too competitive to leave that to the last minute.

Part 2 covers the other half of the equation: how messaging and creative keep those hard-won impressions working harder.
